Why did 253 doctors from around the world gather in Jiangbei?

  In 2013, Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute settled in Jiangbei New Area, giving top priority to gathering global innovation resources, especially leading talents.

○  In 2017, Jiangsu Institute of Industrial Technology launched the “Clustered Doctorate” project, and has currently selected 253 clustered doctorates from global organizations. Today, the project has become a reservoir for national, provincial and municipal talent projects.

○  In June 2022, after receiving an invitation from Academician Ye Lin, director of the Institute of Advanced Composite Materials Forming Technology and Equipment of Jiangsu Industrial Research Institute, Malaysian young scientist Amy came to China from Australia to serve as a doctoral student in Jitri (the English abbreviation of Jiangsu Industrial Research Institute “Jitri” transliteration). For more than two years, she has brought her mastery of composite precision processing technology to the extreme in China.

Overcoming multiple difficulties

○  Young scientist Amy is a Malaysian. Her strong interest in composite materials stems from her love of aerospace in high school. While working in Australia, Amy’s doctoral supervisor, Academician Ye Lin, has been introducing the preparations for the institute to Amy and invited her to join.

○  In July 2022, Amy joined the Advanced Composite Material Forming Technology and Equipment Research Institute of Jiangsu Industrial Research Institute. Before coming to China, Amy had been deeply involved in the field of composite materials for many years. She focused on the research and development of efficient and high-precision drilling technology for carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites (CFRP), promoting technological innovation in this field. She has accumulated rich practical experience in the drilling mechanism of CFRP laminates.

○  She is good at accurately selecting the optimal drilling conditions in complex manufacturing processes, such as feed rate, drilling speed, power, etc., and which parameters should be used to ensure processing quality when supports are used. She has set a new benchmark for the composite material processing industry by continuously optimizing the drilling process, reducing production costs, and improving production efficiency.

○  After coming to China, she also brought this technology to the research institute and was appointed as the director of the composite materials molding division. She carried out the “high-quality and high-efficiency composite materials drilling technology research” project, solving many difficulties in domestic composite materials processing.

○  In November 2022, Amy was successfully selected for the doctoral program. “Being selected for the doctoral program is a recognition of my personal work ability and scientific research strength.” Amy believes that composite materials have broad development prospects both in China and internationally. She and her team are trying to cooperate with countries such as the UAE and Malaysia to expand composite materials from the aerospace and automotive industries to the construction field.

Filling the gap in the military industry

○  If you ask whether the existing car crash test dummies are fully suitable for China’s human injury assessment system, Ma Shuai, technical director of the Engineering Center of the Advanced Automobile Technology Research Institute of Jiangsu Institute of Technology, will answer “no”.

○  “The crash test dummies used in the current standards are mainly designed based on the characteristics of the European and American human body. There are significant differences between the European and American human body and the Chinese human body in terms of both external and internal characteristics.” Ma Shuai explained, “It is also questionable whether the active and passive safety systems of vehicles studied for this purpose can provide the best safety protection for Chinese people.”

○  During the development process, the Advanced Automotive Technology Research Institute team faced two major technical challenges. The first was the simulation of the biomechanical properties of the dummy. They needed to ensure that the dummy’s bones, skin and other structures were highly similar to real people in terms of biomechanical properties. The other challenge was the accuracy and stability of the sensor. In order to overcome these technical difficulties, the laboratory’s experimental schedule was full every day, including consulting materials, repeated experiments, and measurement simulations.

After achieving initial results, the team did not stop. Most of the dummies currently being studied are passive. However, in real situations, when drivers encounter dangerous collision traffic accidents, they will have different active emergency responses to avoid risks in different dangerous scenarios. Therefore , how to integrate the driver’s active emergency response with the passive damage of human body collision, so as to more realistically evaluate the damage to the human body in the collision, has become the next research focus of the team.

○  In September 2022, Ma Shuai joined the Advanced Automotive Technology Research Institute of Jiangsu Institute of Technology. Based on the team’s previous research, he continued to carry out research on human collision injury assessment and safety protection under active emergency conditions. In November of the same year, Ma Shuai was selected for the Jicui doctoral program. Ma Shuai said: “The talent support and learning and exchange platform provided by the Jicui doctoral program have greatly inspired my and my team’s research enthusiasm, and we can devote ourselves to scientific research more focusedly.”

○  At the end of 2022, the team’s research results on dummies were successfully applied to the military industry. The high-speed airflow dummies, target test dummies, airdrop dummies, etc. developed by them have been put into use in aerospace, naval fleet and other fields, breaking through the technical blockade and filling the gap in collision test dummies in the domestic military industry.

Exploring perception technology
Ensure safe mining

○  As one of the earliest entrepreneurs in China engaged in smart mining-related industries, Xie Guotao, deputy general manager of the Intelligent Transportation System and Equipment Research Institute of Jiangsu Industrial Research Institute, has been thinking: “How can this technology be applied to existing industries in society?”

○  In 2017, Xie Guotao followed Academician Ding Rongjun to conduct research on smart mines. Problems such as difficulty in recruiting workers, harsh environment, and high costs in mines make the application of intelligent and unmanned technologies particularly urgent, and also provide an excellent stage for the industrialization of its intelligent network technology.

○  During the research process, Xie Guotao’s team encountered many problems. In the unmanned driving system, perception technology is the “eyes” and “ears” of the unmanned driving, responsible for real-time capture and analysis of surrounding environmental information. However, the complex and harsh mining environment makes it difficult for unmanned driving systems to exhaust all possible scenarios in actual applications, and there is still a risk of recognition errors. Therefore, the accuracy of perception technology must be extreme.

  In response to this, Dr. Xie Guotao led the team to conduct in-depth research and successfully achieved more efficient perception by optimizing algorithms and improving the performance of low-cost sensors such as cameras.

○  In 2019, research related to smart mines encountered new challenges. The complex and changeable climate in mines and obstacles such as dust and gravel generated by operations pose a severe test to the system’s perception capabilities. To this end, Xie Guotao’s team innovatively proposed the “perception safety self-cognition” method, which aims to enable unmanned driving systems to have the ability to self-recognize the surrounding environment and evaluate perception capabilities, providing new ideas and methods for the construction of smart mines.

○  In 2022, Xie Guotao was selected as a Jicui Doctor, which greatly helped his research and the industrialization of his achievements. “In addition to funding subsidies, the Jicui Doctor platform provides a multidisciplinary exchange platform for my team’s research, which also brings more possibilities to smart mine-related technologies,” he said.

○  With the help of this platform, Xie Guotao and his team are actively promoting their research and development results overseas to support the country’s “Belt and Road” initiative. In the future, he and his team will continue to increase investment in technology research and development and industrial application, explore cross-integration with other fields, and apply the technology and experience of smart mines to a wider range of fields.
