In Nanjing National Agricultural High School Zone, the much-anticipated Nanjing Agricultural University Animal Medical Research and Development Center (biosafety tertiary laboratory) project has been basically completed, is in the finishing stage, and will be completed by the end of August. This “national tool”, which has been included in the list of national high-level biosafety laboratories in the “14th Five-Year Plan” of the National Development and Reform Commission, is becoming a reality step by step from the blueprint.
Walking into the construction site of Baima Teaching and Research Base of Nanjing Agricultural University, a new independent experimental building has been erected. The total construction area of the project is 9,928.9 square meters, and the total investment is about 149 million yuan. There are two floors above the ground and one underground floor, and the functional zoning is scientific and strict. In the building, there are two independent experimental areas for large animals, small animals and cells, and a total of 13 core rooms are equipped, including 4 large animal laboratories, 1 large animal dissection room, 4 small animal laboratories and 4 microbiology laboratories.
To ensure the safe and efficient operation of the laboratory, the building is equipped with ventilation and air conditioning, water supply and drainage, automatic control, monitoring and alarm, power supply, gas supply and communication systems. According to the experimental requirements, the core area is equipped with advanced facilities and equipment such as biosafety isolators, biosafety cabinets, live toxic wastewater treatment systems, animal residue treatment systems, efficient exhaust air filtration devices and sterilizers, which build a solid line of biosafety.
According to the contractor, China Electronic System Engineering Second Construction Company project leader Deng Qi, the project has made rapid progress since the start of construction in July 2025, the main building is capped at the end of November 2025, the main structure acceptance is completed in January 2026, and now it has entered the final stage, is expected to be completed at the end of July, to be completed after the official hydropower commissioning. At its peak, 150 workers were working at the same time to ensure that the project was delivered on time. As the first tertiary laboratory of large and medium-sized animal biosafety in Jiangsu Province, the construction of this project is of great significance.
It will not only be an important supplement to China’s high-level biosafety laboratory system, but also serve as an open experimental platform to provide key support for the technological innovation of animal disease prevention and control, the research and development of biomedicine (including veterinary vaccines and human vaccines) in Jiangsu Province, and the detection and research of major or emerging infectious diseases.
The completion of this platform will effectively fill the regional gap, promote the deep integration of veterinary medicine, biotechnology and information technology, and inject hard core scientific and technological strength into the upgrading of public health safety and biological industry in the Yangtze River Delta and even the whole country. As the completion date approaches, the agricultural high school District will actively connect policy resources, provide precise support for the opening and sharing of laboratories and the cooperation of production, education and research, and effectively act as the “logistics department” and “escort” of the platform operation. This laboratory, carrying expectations and heavy responsibilities, will sail smoothly on this hot land of innovation, and open a new chapter in protecting animal health and public safety.
