Purple Mountain Laboratory: Advancing into the 6G “no man’s land”

6G

On July 6, 2023, General Secretary Xi Jinping inspected Nanjing. He came to Zijinshan Laboratory, walked into the exhibition hall and 6G comprehensive laboratory, and learned in detail about the progress of major scientific and technological tasks. General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized that information technology is developing rapidly and disruptive technologies may appear at any time. We must take a pragmatic and solid innovation path to make contributions to achieving high-level scientific and technological self-reliance.

Breakthrough! Innovative achievements continue to emerge

As you enter the building, the first thing that catches your eye is the 16 big words “original innovation, unrivaled, world-class, irreplaceable”.

Further in, a staff member came over to introduce: “We will have new results to release next week!”

There are new achievements! At the National Science and Technology Conference, the National Science and Technology Awards Conference, and the Academicians Conference of the two academies held a few days ago, the achievements of the team of Academician You Xiaohu of Zijinshan Laboratory, “CMOS Millimeter-wave Large-scale Integrated Flat-panel Phased Array Technology and Industrialization”, and the achievements of the team of Professor Hong Wei, “Microwave Millimeter-wave Testing Technology and Measuring Instruments”, have just won the second prize of the National Technological Invention Award and the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award.

Going back in time. From April 16 to 18 this year, the 2024 Global 6G Technology Conference was held in Nanjing with the theme of “Innovation foreseeing the future of 6G”. It was hosted by the Future Mobile Communications Forum and Zijinshan Laboratory. As one of the organizers, Zijinshan Laboratory exhibited some achievements including the 6G end-to-end integrated test platform, the 6G non-cellular wireless access network system and the world’s first 6G integrated laboratory built in my country.

At the beginning of 2022, the Purple Mountain Laboratory completed the world’s first 6G photon terahertz real-time wireless transmission communication experiment, and achieved a real-time transmission rate of 1Tbps at the end of 2023, once again breaking the world’s highest real-time transmission record in the field of terahertz wireless communication. The transmission capacity is 100 times higher than that of 5G. Why has this ace laboratory achieved so much?

“The general secretary’s care is a strong driving force for us to carry out technical research.” Under the leadership of You Xiaohu, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and chief scientist of Zijinshan Laboratory, the team members worked hard to race against time. They broke down the target tasks into monthly and weekly tasks, worked hard and seized the time to carry out technical research.

“The next three to four years will be the most critical period for the development of 6G.” You Xiaohu said, “We will work harder to live up to the general secretary’s expectations of us.”

General Secretary Xi Jinping always keeps scientific research talents in mind, which has left a deep impression on all the scientific and technological staff of Purple Mountain Laboratory.

Liu Yunjie, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chief scientist of Purple Mountain Laboratory, said that on December 13, 2014, General Secretary Xi Jinping asked him with concern: “Has all the team come here?” In July last year, he reported to the General Secretary that Purple Mountain Laboratory had gathered a scientific research team of more than 1,000 people.

In the laboratory, the researchers present include gray-haired older generations, tall and straight-limbed people born in the 1970s and 1980s, and many born in the 1990s. It is reported that more than 40% of the team’s researchers have PhDs, including more than 20 postdoctoral fellows, 4 academicians of the two academies, and more than 70 high-end talents at the national, ministerial and provincial levels. Taking communication technology as an example, it has brought together three generations of R&D talents, including You Xiaohu.
