It takes ten years to grow trees and famous companies become a forest.
The German automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturer BMW Group (hereinafter referred to as “BMW”) is one of them.
In 2021, BMW and Chengmai Technology, optimistic about the development prospects of Nanjing’s software and automobile industries, jointly established BMW’s fourth R&D center in China after Beijing, Shanghai and Shenyang in Yuhuatai District – BMW Chengmai Information Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “BMW Chengmai”); also in 2021, as BMW’s first independent digital business company established in the global market, Lingyue Digital Information Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Lingyue”) established its first branch in Nanjing.
Opportunities in Nanjing did not disappoint the trust. Since then, BMW has been like a steed galloping on the industrial version of “Nandu’s Prosperity Map”.
In just three years, BMW Chengmai, which started from a “blank sheet of paper” in Nanjing, has grown into a R&D team of more than 600 people. The scope of its R&D has also expanded from the initial in-vehicle intelligent infotainment systems and mobile applications to autonomous driving systems, maps and navigation, intelligent voice interaction, in-vehicle operating systems, artificial intelligence and cloud computing. In September this year, Lingyue Nanjing Branch was selected as one of Nanjing’s first “global digital service providers.”
“Today, Nanjing has become the BMW Group’s information technology and digital service innovation base in China and even in Asia.” Wu Yanyan, vice president of the BMW Group, said that the rapid development of the business is inseparable from Nanjing’s unique advantages in scientific and educational talents, active innovation ecology, and strong support from various departments at all levels of government. “It must be said that the cooperation between BMW and Nanjing is a two-way journey.”

In Nanjing, which has a large number of enterprises and diverse industries, opportunities are not “idle”.
Wacker Chemie AG (Wacker), a German company that settled in Nanjing Jiangbei New Materials Science and Technology Park in 2009, completed the capacity expansion of its production base in Nanjing last year, adding one set of emulsion reactor and one set of redispersible latex powder spray dryer, more than doubling its production capacity. Wacker invested approximately US$100 million in the capacity expansion project of the integrated production base.
Having been rooted in Nanjing for 15 years, Wacker Chemie President and CEO Heda He said with emotion that China is the world’s largest market for construction applications, with construction spending accounting for about 20% of the world’s total. The capacity expansion of the Nanjing base will further consolidate Wacker’s position as a global leader in related industries.

For an individual, 20 years is like the prime of youth and vigor of students, while for an enterprise, it is like the start of a business and the rise of its ambitions.
Looking down from the sky, the office building of Fit (China) Pharmaceutical Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Fit China”) located in Jiangning Development Zone looks like the tail of an airplane. Fit Group is a leading company in the world’s pharmaceutical tablet pressing industry. In 2004, it established a wholly-owned subsidiary, Fit China, in Nanjing. And this company is also soaring in Nanjing.
“As the third subsidiary of our group, Fette Compacting China was one of the first medium-sized German machinery manufacturers to invest in Nanjing in 2004. At that time, we only had more than 20 employees.” Anders Schmidt, general manager of Fette Compacting China, has lived in China for more than ten years and settled in Nanjing in 2016. “Nanjing is one of the most developed manufacturing centers in China, with rich scientific research talent resources in advanced manufacturing and other aspects. There is also a very broad supplier base near the Nanjing factory, which is very important for our efficient and high-level machine production.” He said.
Relevant data shows that in 2014, the 10th anniversary of the completion and operation of Fette’s Nanjing factory, the high-speed tablet presses produced by the factory had occupied nearly 90% of the high-end tablet press market in China. In that year, 4 out of every 10 tablet presses produced by the German Fette Group were produced by Fette China.
In 2018, the company plans to continue to expand its production capacity. Where will the new base be located? Fit, which has worked with Nanjing for 14 years, still regards Nanjing as the “optimal solution”. “I think we should stay in Nanjing. We have a foundation here to continue to develop. The company has also received strong support from the local government and relevant departments, allowing us to continue to expand our operations. Therefore, it is a wise move to develop in Nanjing for a long time.” said Evers.
That year, the Fitting Group invested more than RMB 440 million to build a new factory with a total area of more than 21,000 square meters in Nanjing. This was the largest single project investment in Fitting’s history in China, reflecting the German parent company’s high confidence in Nanjing’s future development potential and its commitment to long-term development in China.
“The expansion in 2018 was a decisive change. Since then, we have been able to provide customers with solutions for the entire life cycle management of equipment from pre-sales to after-sales, and we have deservedly become the second all-round subsidiary in Fette’s global network structure,” recalled Evers.

The past 20 years have also been a period of rapid growth for the German Coperion Group (hereinafter referred to as “Coperion”).
On November 21, the construction of Coperion’s new plant in Jiangning Development Zone officially started. Coperion is a global leader in plastic compounding and extrusion systems and bulk material conveying systems. In 2004, Coperion established Coperion (Nanjing) Machinery Co., Ltd. in Jiangning District. In the nearly 20 years since it took root in Jiangning, Coperion has increased its registered capital from the original US$5 million to US$13.52 million.
Shen Jun, the company’s president, shared a set of data: the compound annual growth rate of revenue from 2019 to 2023 is 26%, and the market share has always maintained a leading position in the industry; after the new project is completed, it will have an annual production capacity of 300 high-end extrusion equipment and 800 sets of supporting equipment, and 800 material conveying components… “The investment in the new project is mainly due to the long-term optimistic investment prospects in Nanjing.” She is optimistic about the future, “We are actively introducing Coperion’s advanced manufacturing technology and product technology from Germany, absorbing the genes of the German manufacturing industry, and striving to achieve a greater degree of product localization.”
