A one-person company has helped launch the entrepreneurial dream of a “virtual scenery creator for the Spring Festival Gala”

On December 25th last year, it was the “full moon” day for Liu Weilu’s one-person company (OPC) community “Zamen·Workshop” in the AI·Mirror World – Nanjing Artificial Intelligence Ecological District. On that day, he went to the production hall of Jiangsu Radio and Television General Station to record a technical support video and confidently posted a WeChat Moments post saying “Final push for the year”.

After graduating from the Television Production major of China Media University, Liu Weilu has been deeply engaged in the construction of software and hardware for virtual studios in the national broadcasting system. The virtual studios of provincial-level and above broadcasting stations across the country have almost all witnessed the sweat he put in during the construction process. With the rapid evolution of the times, Liu Weilu’s business scope has gradually expanded to AR, VR, XR of Unreal Engine, online packaging, large-screen packaging, sports tactical analysis, AI real-time interactive digital humans, and other series of products.

In recent years, with the continuous development of virtual reality technology, when viewers sit in front of their TV sets on New Year’s Eve to watch the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, increasingly frequent are various magnificent AI images on the screen. And behind this, there is Liu Weilu’s arduous efforts.

“At the CCTV Spring Festival Gala in 2022, we worked closely with the program team to meticulously create an immersive three-dimensional virtual scene for ‘Only This Green Color’. The program eventually won awards in the relevant industry categories,” Liu Weilu said. “We designed a rippling water surface in the scene, using the artistic techniques of the ‘next-generation’ virtual engine technology. We seamlessly combined the reflections of the actors, the images on the large screen, the foreground of the ink painting, and the camera positions, making the dance performers seem to be immersed in the ‘The Long River and Spring Mountains’ painting, bringing a strong visual impact to the entire program.”
Professional terms are difficult for ordinary people to understand, but the stunningly presented scenes at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala are unforgettable. For example, in the ‘Red Packet Rain’ program of the 2023 Spring Festival Gala, particles were used to emit red packets, creating a joyful and festive stage scene… Talking about his ‘Spring Festival Gala scene creation’, Liu Weilu spoke at length. This was also the reason he was determined to ‘venture into entrepreneurship’.

Two years ago, Liu Weilu established Earth Mountain (Nanjing) Technology Co., Ltd., choosing the Software Valley Yunmi City as the location. At first, he worked alone, but later he recruited several young colleagues. For such a small business, Liu Weilu was in charge of the business side, but various operational matters of the company always left him puzzled. It wasn’t until the middle of last year that the “Qizheng · Workshop” OPC community in Software Valley issued a “call for participation”, and Liu Weilu almost immediately signed up.

“The OPC community is different from co-working spaces and incubators. It places particular emphasis on the personal capabilities of entrepreneurs.” Liu Weilu said. The OPC community requires entrepreneurs to have a background in AI and digital technologies, and considers factors such as technological innovation ability, business model, commercial value, and compliance as important assessment criteria. Liu Weilu, who has years of experience in producing CCTV Spring Festival Gala, is one of the outstanding candidates among the nearly 30 applicants. Soon, the first 14 enterprises were granted permission to move in. In late November last year, Liu Weilu, along with a few of his colleagues, moved into the “Qi Neng · Workshop” OPC community on Software Avenue.

The 3,500-square-meter area is bright, with modern yet simple decoration styles, spacious public areas, and complete facilities for tea breaks. The several “tech guys” from Earth Mountain (Nanjing) Technology Co., Ltd. were full of praise for the community’s service environment. Liu Weilu said, “Recently, a cafeteria has opened upstairs, with meals costing around 20 yuan. It’s both affordable and delicious. The facilities are simply outstanding.”

“Rent reduction is not the biggest benefit of the community.” Huang Yu is the operation director of the OPC community of “Qi Neng · Workshop”. She told the reporter that the community is based on the core concept of “one person + AI equals a company”, focusing on early innovation and acceleration in the AI field. With the collaborative support of AI, individuals can independently complete the entire business loop from product design, research and development, production to market launch, user operation and customer service response, achieving the super individual entrepreneurship model of “single person + AI as a company”.

Providing an all-round growth environment from creative verification to industrial implementation for AI-native technologies and talents is the core value of the “ZhiNeng·Workshop” OPC community. Huang Yu introduced that currently, the enterprises that have joined the community cover “AI + industrial development”, “AI + consumption quality improvement”, and “AI + people’s livelihood benefits” among other fields. Although it has only been operating for a little over a month, the community not only organized many rich community activities but also implemented policies such as “zero rent, computing power coupons, language data coupons, and model coupons” in full. The community will also provide a full-chain closed-loop service system for enterprises through “competitions – training – incubation – investment”.

“Running a business is not as simple as running a business. During this period, the community has organized many training sessions to help me enhance my business capabilities. The operations of a company require many affairs such as finance, auditing, legal affairs, and patent application. The community alone has more than 30 service-oriented institutions that provide door-to-door services to connect us with relevant parties.” Liu Weiliu said, “In the future, the community will also precisely match application scenarios for us, connect and introduce capital momentum, and accelerate the implementation and growth of technologies.” The Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China has designated AI as the core engine for developing new productive forces and building a digital China and has made systematic deployments. It has clearly proposed “Supporting young scientific and technological talents in innovation and entrepreneurship.” Under this background, the “ZhiNeng·Workshop” OPC community is confidently embracing more “single-person-founded” enterprises. In just over a month, the community has received nearly 50 “incubation application forms”, and the selection process for the next batch of entrepreneurs is currently in full swing.
