Construction using an earth pressure balance shield machine
Zhang Fanjun, shield manager of the second branch of the Ningwu Railway Project of China Railway 14th Bureau, introduced that on August 12 this year, the shield section of the tunnel started from the Meixiang Road working shaft in Yuhuatai District, and passed under the Nonghua River, Airport Expressway, Qinhuai New River, Hanfushan Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway Existing Tunnel, etc., passed over the S1 Metro Line, and ran parallel to the S3 Metro Line for a long distance, and finally reached the existing Hanfushan Tunnel in Jiangning District.
“Currently, the ‘Ningwu’ shield machine has excavated to the 136th ring, about 245 meters, and successfully crossed the first risk source – the Nonghua River.” Zhang Fanjun explained that when the shield tunnel passed under the Nonghua River, the top was 1.2 meters lower than the existing riverbed elevation, and the minimum vertical clearance with the newly built box culvert was 0.5 meters. The risk of passing under is high and the control requirements are high.
To avoid risks, the project team has repeatedly demonstrated the shield machine’s plan to cross the Nonghua River, and detailed safety technical measures and emergency measures. During the construction, the project team provided on-site protection, conducted 24-hour inspections around the risk source, measured ground subsidence, slag volume data, and synchronous grouting volume in real time, and strictly controlled the parameters and posture of the shield machine during the excavation process, ensuring that the shield machine successfully crossed the Nonghua River.
“We expect to reach 400 rings of excavation before the Spring Festival, and reach the key milestone of the shield section tunnel penetration by the end of October next year,” said Zhang Fanjun.
