“It was quite busy today. I photographed four customers on Wutong Avenue in the morning, six customers in the afternoon, and another customer made an appointment to take photos at Confucius Temple in the evening.” On November 22, Gao Jie, a photographer born in the 2000s, took photos on Wutong Avenue. “I arrived at Wutong Avenue before 8 a.m., when there were fewer people and it was easier to take photos. There weren’t too many people in the early morning. At about 9:30, there was already a photographer every few steps. If it was the weekend, it would basically be just following the crowd.”

Gao Jie is from Linyi, Shandong. His photography journey started this year. At first, it was just a hobby, but later it gradually developed into his sideline. “When I came to Nanjing for a trip last year, I saw photographers taking photos on Wutong Avenue. I also like photography, so I had the idea of doing some photo shoots in my spare time.” In order to improve the quality of his photos, he specially bought a camera and lens. Because his business is good, he is also preparing to upgrade his equipment.
Compared with traditional studio photo shoots, the charging method for appointment photo shoots is very flexible, and can be charged by the photo or by the hour. “I will teach customers how to pose, and let them choose the photos after the photo shoot. I charge 100 yuan for 6 retouched photos, and I will also give them a few landscape photos.” Gao Jie said that some customers have already paid the deposit for December, and there are many inquiries about the schedule. Some customers are already consulting about the shooting schedule during the Chinese New Year.

“Photos are very important to me. I can’t let my friends suffer.” Chen Chen from Guangdong came to Nanjing with her boyfriend. When asked why she chose to hire a photographer instead of asking her boyfriend to help her, she said: “My boyfriend can only take photos with his mobile phone, so the results are naturally not satisfactory. “There are too many people on Wutong Avenue, and I can’t take good photos by myself. The photographer knows where to avoid the crowd and what actions will be more photogenic.” Tang Tang, a tourist from Shanghai, has the same idea as Chen Chen. She did not make an appointment with a photographer before departure. She saw many photographers taking photos on Wutong Avenue. After comparing several photographers, she temporarily hired a photographer to take photos. “I deliberately chose a female photographer to guide me to do various actions without embarrassment. The retouched photos cost 20 yuan each, and I chose 4, and I am still very satisfied.”
