Netherlands-based flying car company Pal-V is preparing to start serial production of the world’s first combined road / air vehicle after agreeing contracts with a key supplier and finalizing certification arrangements
Pal-V’s agreement with Spanish company Airtificial Aerospace and Defense includes the supply of several composite parts including the fuel tank, body parts, propeller and rotor blades
The Liberty combines both flying and driving capabilities in one vehicle. During flight is a two-seat gyroplane with a top speed of 180 km/h (110mph), a maximum take-off weight of 910kg (2,000 lbs), a range of 500km (310 miles) and flight endurance of four hours .
On the ground, once it has been transformed into a three-wheeled car, it offers a top speed of 160km/h (100mph) and range of 1,315 kilometers (817 miles). It uses two Rotax 912iS engines.
Our Pal-V Flying car company was founded in 2008, is the only one in the world that has passed the EU motor vehicle road permit, can fly and drive the flying car, the verification aircraft has been successfully tested in 2012, currently entering the final stage of airworthiness certification, is expected to carry out airworthiness certification flight test this year, and get the EU airworthiness certification at the end of the year. We are also currently working on an electric direct-lift vehicle, known in the industry as evtol, which has 25 sets of patents.
There have been over 200 orders. The main customers are Aifei and Career Apps. Eu laws and regulations were chosen because of their wide coverage; road permits are common in 55 countries around the world, and airworthiness certification applies to 80% of them.
They are also the standard setter. In 2020, they succeeded in getting the European Parliament to pass the Supplementary Regulation on roadworthy Large rotorcraft, also known as CS27+, which China should call 27 plus. This supplementary regulation is actually written by our company, and it is only for their products. All the later comers, if they want to get the airworthiness certification of similar products, have to meet the standards set by them. In addition, as the chairman of the gyroplane Training Standards Committee, our company has developed the standards for training and examination of pilot licenses and instructor licenses.
This company is obtaining the certificates of EU aircraft design company, production company, maintenance company and training company at the same time, only with the qualifications of these companies, the products produced can have market access. After having the qualification of a design company, you can supervise yourself by developing and designing the next product, without all the design details being agreed by the bureau, the compliance time of the next model can be reduced by 50% to 80%. These qualifications are actually the most valuable thing in our company.
The reason why this company has been able to survive from 2008 to now, in addition to the support of the Netherlands Innovation Fund, there are nearly 200 angel investors, most of whom know the aviation industry, the money invested in this company is a fraction of their assets, so every time the company needs to refinance, they support a little. The total investment in the company now exceeds 70 million euros. The company’s expected annual production capacity is 100 to 500 cars, with annual sales of 70 to 140 million euros.
