Lu Weidong met with James Hickman, the president of the International Society for Microphysiological Systems, and his delegation

On October 19th, Lu Weidong, the Party Secretary of Jiangbei New Area and the Party Secretary of Pukou District, met with James Hickman, the President of the International Society for Microphysiological Systems, and his delegation.

Microphysiological systems (MPS) are models constructed in vitro that can simulate the physiological microenvironment and functions of human tissues or organs. This system flexibly employs various technologies such as organ-on-a-chip and organoid culture, and is widely used in fields like disease research, drug development, and precision medicine.
The International Society for Microphysiological Systems (iMPSS) is dedicated to promoting innovation in the biomedical field through microphysiological systems technology. Members of the society include relevant government regulatory agencies around the world, funding institutions such as health foundations and charitable foundations, academic research institutions such as universities and research institutes, as well as industry enterprises and medical centers. The society will promote the application of life sciences from basic research to clinical practice, drug screening and safety assessment, and facilitate the international standardization of microphysiological system technologies by supporting extensive exchanges among its members.

Lu Weidong, on behalf of the Party Working Committee and the Management Committee of Jiangbei New Area, extended a warm welcome to James Hickman and his delegation. He said that Nanjing Jiangbei New Area has been continuously focusing on the development of emerging industries such as life and health, integrated circuits, new materials, and digital economy. Centering on the life and health industry and focusing on the main carrier area of Nanjing Biomedical Valley, a comprehensive innovation ecosystem for the life and health industry that integrates “learning, research, production and application” throughout the entire chain will be constructed. At present, the new district is actively exploring new technological blue oceans including organ-on-a-chip. It hopes to join hands with the International Society for Microphysiological Systems to fully seize the opportunities of new technological innovation and development, and strengthen cooperation and exchanges in aspects such as technical training, talent cultivation, and industrial nurturing, so as to jointly seize the new track of future life sciences. It is hoped that the International Society for Microphysiological Systems will play the role of a bridge and link, make full use of the opportunity of holding important events, further lead and drive more industrial resources, scientific research resources and educational resources to settle down, and build a new industrial ecosystem and scientific research and development highland for organ chips in the new district.
James Hickman said that the International Society for Microphysiological Systems is gathering global innovative resources to jointly promote the formulation of international standards and regulations for organ-on-a-chip. All along, the Society has been committed to promoting the introduction of more resources from local governments, industry enterprises and research institutions in China, and jointly promoting the technological development of the organ-on-chip industry. Nanjing Jiangbei New Area has an excellent industrial foundation and is highly consistent with the International Society for Microphysiological Systems in the development direction of organ-on-a-chip. We look forward to both sides continuously improving the level of scientific research innovation and application through in-depth cooperation, constantly exploring the deep integration of industry, academia and research in the field of organ-on-a-chip, and jointly promoting the practical application of this innovative biotechnology.
Lena Smirnova, the former president of the International Society for Microphysiological Systems, Jan Lichtenberg, the successor president of the International Society for Microphysiological Systems, Wang Wei, a member of the Party Working Committee and deputy director of the Management Committee of Jiangbei New Area, Gu Zhongze, the director of the Institute of Organ-on-a-Chip at Southeast University, and responsible persons from relevant departments and industrial platforms of the new area attended the meeting.
